Malonyl CoA levels during fat biosynthesis
One of the substrates of fat biosynthesis is Malonyl CoA. Therefore, determining the its levels in various tissues can be used to determine the levels of fat synthesis in these tissues. Evidence is accumulating that indicates that synthesis of fat varies wthin different tissues of people affected with diabetes. Therefore, the measurement of the levels of Malonyl CoA within these various tissues can be used as both an indicator of the onset of diabetes and as a measurement for the efficacy of various treatments for this disease. Our laboratory is designing an HPLC assay in order to measure the levels of Malonyl Coa within muscle tissue as an indicator for the levels of ongoing fat biosynthesis.
